NVR Retention Calculator

Find out how many days of camera video your drives will hold, or how much storage you need to keep video for the number of days you want.

Cameras

Recording to the NVR

Bitrates are typical planning values for H.265 at medium quality. H.264 cameras usually need noticeably more, so enter a higher number for them. For a firm number, read the bitrate from each camera's stream settings, or use the camera maker's own calculator. Cameras set to a higher frame rate or quality use more.

Recording and storage

Many small NVRs do not support RAID, so choose No RAID for those. RAID 5 and RAID 6 keep recording through a drive failure. A single drive without RAID loses its video if it fails. Use the speed converter to turn Mbps into MB/s.

Assumes 5% of the usable space is lost to formatting and file system overhead, and that the NVR overwrites the oldest video when the drives are full. Compression, scene activity and motion settings change real results, so leave some margin.
